Speaker Fecteau: “There are 54,000 Mainers who relied on the enhanced ACA tax credits that have faced a premium increase of 81% in order to keep their plans this year.”
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Defend America Action is releasing a new report, first published by the Maine Independent, highlighting the devastating health care crisis Donald Trump and Republicans have created for Maine.
Defend America Action also hosted a press call this morning with Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau and Maine State Representative Gary Friedmann to discuss that crisis and its consequences for Mainers.
“Maine families are struggling. There are 54,000 Mainers who relied on the enhanced ACA tax credits that have faced a premium increase of 81% in order to keep their plans this year, and there’s a double a double-digit rate hike planned for 2027,” said Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau. “Many Mainers – up up to 31,000 – could lose Medicaid in the first year of Trump and Congressional Republicans’ reporting requirements alone, which are going to take effect, of course, after the election.”
“One of my good friends is self-employed, has a family, a husband and two children, and when those ACA supports were stripped, they decided just to go without and risk it. We’re finding that 9% of families who previously had ACA coverage have disenrolled this year,” said Maine State Representative Gary Friedmann. “If you can’t afford to go to the doctor, if you can’t afford your prescription drugs, you’re going to end up getting sicker and need more expensive care, and that becomes a burden, not only for consumers, but to our whole health care system.”
