Sen. Skoufis: “Trump promised to end inflation ‘on day one.’ And here we are, almost two years into his second term, and we see inflation has persisted and gotten worse.”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Defend America Action is releasing a new report highlighting the devastating affordability crisis Donald Trump and Republicans have created for New York.

Defend America Action also hosted a press call this afternoon with New York State Senator James Skoufis, New York State Assemblymember Dana Levenberg, and Nyack Mayor Joe Rand to discuss that affordability crisis and its consequences for New Yorkers.

“Right now, gas is $4.47 on average in New York State. Electricity bills have never been higher. Trump promised to end inflation ‘on day one.’ And here we are, almost two years into his second term, and we see inflation has persisted and gotten worse. He promised to cut the construction costs and the purchase costs of new homes in half. It has never been more near impossible for New Yorkers to purchase a home. He promised groceries would be cheaper. You don’t have to go further than your supermarket to know that that, too, was a false promise and a lie,” said State Senator James Skoufis.

“Skyrocketing health care costs are adding to the affordability crisis we are facing here, thanks to HR 1 and the failure to extend the ACA tax credits,” said State Assemblymember Dana Levenberg. “One of our own here in the Lower Hudson Valley, Mike Lawler, was the deciding vote on the so-called ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ – the same Congressman who promised he would never cut Medicaid. New Yorkers need affordable health care in order to be able to work and afford all the other costs that are going up right now, and with these federal cuts, that’s getting harder and harder to find.”

“When you have a situation where the federal government abandons its commitment to working people in the middle class, it puts an enormous burden on the state governments and the local governments, the small village governments like mine,” said Nyack Mayor Joe Rand. “Now we have to clean up the mess at the local and state level. The New York State Legislature has done a great job of trying to mitigate some of the impact of the federal government’s cuts, but we simply don’t have the resources to be able to make up the entire difference.”
