Chris Meagher: “The Iranians seem to continually call the president’s bluff with his endless on again, off again threats to escalate. And as the president continues to flounder, Americans are paying the price.”

WASHINGTON, DC Today, Major General Randy Manner (Ret), former Chief Defense Department Spokesperson Chris Meagher, and former National Economic Council Senior Policy Advisor Aya Ibrahim joined Defend America Action in a press call to discuss Donald Trump’s war of choice with Iran that has cost American lives, sent gas prices soaring, and done nothing to improve the lives of families here at home.

For working families already struggling to make ends meet, the economic consequences of Trump’s war have been immediate and devastating. Trump started a war that the vast majority of Americans oppose; at the same time, working families face crushing health care costs and skyrocketing electricity bills, and his actions are only making matters worse.

“America’s military strength has never ever rested solely on the courage of its military members. It has depended upon preparation, logistics, training, industrial capacity, and strategic foresight and responsible civilian leadership. Regretfully, the Department of Defense civilian leadership, not our men and women in uniform, is rudderless in ever increasingly dangerous waters,” said Major General Randy Manner (Ret).

“President Trump has forced America into a dead end with this war,” said former Chief Defense Department Spokesperson Chris Meagher. “It’s obvious that he didn’t have a strategy going into the conflict, and now we’re at a stalemate with Iranian hardliners and little diplomatic progress. The Iranians seem to continually call the president’s bluff with his endless on again, off again threats to escalate. And as the president continues to flounder, Americans are paying the price.”

“On top of these compounding shocks that families are experiencing, Republicans last year passed a tax bill that made significant cuts to the safety net that’s supposed to catch people when they fall,” said former National Economic Council Senior Policy Advisor Aya Ibrahim. “At the end of the day, the costs of this war of choice by the president are not born equally. While we’re looking in the short term at significant increases to prices that people are paying at the grocery store and at the pump, over the medium and long term, we’re also going to see this war further exacerbate economic inequality in the United States.”
