TAX BREAK? FORGET IT: High Prices Offset The Few Tax Breaks Working Arizonans Were Promised

By April 15, 2026No Comments

Today marks Tax Day, and Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Arizona on Friday in a desperate attempt to hype up his big, ugly tax bill he signed into law last year. But Americans and Arizonans aren’t fooled. Everyone except the wealthiest of the wealthy has been harmed by Trump’s disastrous agenda. Inflation is surging to its highest level in nearly two years, oil and gas prices went up 30% and 20% in March alone, and health care costs are skyrocketing. Just 18% of Americans expect to pay less in taxes this year, and the IRS estimates that average refunds are increasing by just $346 this year. The average Arizona household would need a tax refund of at least $18,680 just to offset Trump and Republicans ripping away Affordable Care Act tax credits and hiking the cost of health care, spiking gas prices with their war in Iran, and raising prices through tariffs – more than fifty times the expected increase this year. Read more about how much Arizona households would need in tax breaks to offset Trump’s affordability crisis:

  • Americans Know Trump Isn’t Lowering Their Tax Burden. New Navigator polling shows just 18% of Americans expect to pay less in taxes this year. A majority of service industry workers continue to oppose the Trump-GOP tax bill passed last summer.
  • Trump’s Tax Refund Won’t Offset Skyrocketing Health Insurance Premiums. For an older couple living in Scottsdale, Arizona making the median household wage of $85,000 a year and buying insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), annual costs are rising by around $17,000 – astronomically higher than the average tax refund boost. One of the cheaper comprehensive ACA plans cost $665 a month for 2025. After Trump and Republicans ripped away ACA tax credits for working families, that same ACA plan now costs $2,088 a month for 2026.
  • Trump’s Tax Refund Won’t Offset the Massive Cost of His Tariffs. Trump’s disastrous tariffs cost the average American household $2,120 in 2025, and are estimated to cost Americans $2,500 in 2026 if Trump re-imposes tariffs overturned by the Supreme Court. Even if his tariffs stay overturned, Trump’s remaining tariffs will increase household costs by around $600 in 2026 – nearly twice Trump’s tax refund increase.
  • Trump’s Tax Refund Won’t Offset the Spike In Gas Prices Caused By His War With Iran. Arizonans are paying roughly $108 more a month at the pump compared to last year thanks to Trump’s war in Iran – with no relief in sight. This $1,080 increase in the price of gas by the end of the year would more than triple Trump’s tax refund for Arizonans.
