SHOT/CHASER: Trump Holds Housing Relief Hostage For Millions of Struggling Americans

By June 24, 2026No Comments

SHOT: Americans can’t afford to buy a home in Trump’s America. Data shows new home sales have fallen nearly 7% from a year ago, as high prices and elevated mortgage rates keep millions of Americans locked out of the market, with the dream of homeownership out of reach.

Yahoo Finance: “Sales of newly built homes dropped in May while prices held firm, a fresh sign that poor affordability is still sidelining many would-be buyers. Sales activity dropped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 580,000, down nearly 7% from 622,000 a year ago […] It’s the second straight month of disappointing sales, following a drop in activity in April as well.”

CHASER: And just when Congress actually did something about it, passing a bipartisan bill to increase housing supply, lower costs, and crack down on private equity buying up homes, Trump decided to hold it hostage. He said families struggling to afford a roof over their heads was “of minor importance,” refusing to sign until Congress passes his voter suppression bill.

NBC News: “President Donald Trump abruptly canceled his plans to sign a major, bipartisan housing bill on Wednesday, saying he will not do so until Congress passes the SAVE America Act […] Just hours before heading to Capitol Hill, Trump called the big, bipartisan housing bill Republicans hope to run on in the fall ‘of minor importance.’”
