Today, Donald Trump is touching down at the Detroit Economic Club to gaslight Michiganders on the affordability crisis affecting every aspect of their lives. In response, legislators from the state are releasing a report, in partnership with Defend America Action and Progress Michigan, calling out Trump and Congressional Republicans for their lies about the economy. Across Michigan, costs are up, and voters know exactly who is to blame.
Whether it’s the growing gap between rent cost and Michiganders’ wages, Detroit residents spending the largest share of their income on groceries of any major American city, up to 750,000 Michigan residents losing their health care because of Trump and Republicans, or electric bills soaring, the list of Trump’s broken promises goes on and on. The legislators note this in the report, and point out the only people doing well under this administration are Trump’s wealthy and well-connected friends:
“Throughout Trump’s second term, the President and Republicans in Congress have worked in lock-step to reward their rich and powerful friends at the expense of everyone else. They are obliterating the economic security of millions across the country, and working families are the ones paying the price.”
The report goes on to note that Trump made a point of promising Michiganders economic relief on the campaign trail last year. He committed to cutting energy and electricity prices in half within a year “for your home, your car, your air conditioner, your heating, all of it,” said he would “end inflation,” and promised to “slash your prices, raise your wages, and bring thousands of factories back to America and back to Michigan.” None of that happened, and he’ll have to answer to the Detroit Economic Club for his administration’s long list of failures.
