WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Defend America Action is releasing a new report highlighting how Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans’ affordability crisis is devastating Nebraska families. The average Nebraska household has paid an additional $3,700+ for goods and services under Trump. Ground beef now averages $6.89 a pound, diesel prices just hit a record high heading into harvest, and roughly 78,275 Nebraskans are projected to lose health care coverage because of Trump and Republicans’ cuts.
Defend America Action also hosted a press call this afternoon with Denise Powell, Democratic candidate for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, along with Nebraska State Senators Dunixi Guereca and Margo Juarez, to discuss the affordability crisis and its consequences for Nebraskans.
“I often talk about this as being kind of like a Jenga tower: by cutting Medicaid with the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ and by cutting subsidies for the ACA, the administration has essentially moved some of the bottom blocks of the Jenga stack, and they’ve made this tower a lot more wobbly,” said Denise Powell, Democratic candidate for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. “Affordability is the number one issue that folks from all parties – from the rural and urban parts of the state – want to talk about because everybody is struggling right now.”
“I talk to the folks in my community, and I don’t need any fancy poll to tell me what’s going on. It’s affordability. That’s the major issue. The price to live has gone up,” said Nebraska State Senator Dunixi Guereca. “We have an unauthorized war that’s driving up fuel costs to record high levels, and we have a trade policy that doesn’t make sense. And at the exact moment when the working class families in my district are being squeezed the hardest, Washington is pulling out the rug, pulling out that safety net.”
“I went to the grocery store just this past week. Five pounds of hamburger cost me $28.93. I kept the receipt because I was in such shock. So the reality is hitting my pocketbook, just like it is for those in our community. These prices are just outrageous,” said Nebraska State Senator Margo Juarez. “This is the reality of what we’re facing, trying to get these needs met, these cost reduced, and we’ve got to figure out a solution.”
