Nearly two weeks into Donald Trump’s deeply unpopular war with Iran, the Trump administration’s reckless incompetence has had staggering consequences for Americans. Trump administration insiders have revealed that the President has had no clear strategy and been caught off guard at every step of the way, leading to disastrous consequences for U.S. soldiers, foreign civilians, diplomats, and U.S. citizens alike. Now, with embassies shuttered, regional airspace largely closed to commercial traffic, and the Strait of Hormuz closed by Iran, protracted war that will only result in higher costs, more casualties and chaos is all but inevitable. Trump and his team were caught flatfooted, and it’s the American people who are suffering the consequences of his actions.
The Trump Administration’s Incompetence Is Killing Civilians, Putting Our Soldiers In Harm’s War
- The Trump Administration Has No Clear War Strategy, Frustrating Insiders and Allies Alike. Trump administration officials are reportedly “pessimistic about the lack of a clear strategy.” Trump himself has offered wildly conflicting timelines for the expected length of the war. After a two-hour, closed-door briefing on the Iran War with Trump administration officials, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) described Trump’s war plans as “incoherent and incomplete.” Even U.S. allies see no clear plan for ending the war swiftly. Four other government officials briefed on the war by Trump administration officials have confirmed there is reportedly “no clear vision for the U.S. war on Iran or its aftermath.”
- Trump Officials Admitted the Military Was Caught Off-Guard. Trump’s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has admitted that Iran’s response to U.S.-Israeli airstrikes authorized by Trump have caught the military somewhat off guard. U.S. military leaders are warning that the Iranian regime is quickly adapting to U.S. military tactics, with help from Russia, and exploiting weaknesses by targeting key air defense and radar systems.

- Running Low on Interceptors, the Trump Administration Was Unprepared To Combat Iran’s Fleet of Cheap, Deadly Drones. Before Trump even launched strikes on Iran, top Pentagon officials warned that the U.S. only had enough interceptors to counter Iranian drone strikes and missile attacks for two weeks. Now, Trump has brought the U.S. into a protracted conflict with Iran without a long-term plan to protect U.S. military assets and allies from aerial attack. Even though Iran’s military budget is a small fraction of the size of America’s, U.S. forces have been burning through billions of dollars worth of defensive interceptor missiles combatting Iran’s barrage of low-cost drones – even though the U.S. has spent years helping Ukraine defend itself from the very same drones.
- Trump’s Incompetent War Has Wounded As Many As 150 U.S. Troops So Far. New reporting shows as many as 150 U.S. troops have been wounded so far in Trump’s war with Iran, dozens of them with severe injuries. Worse still, many military members rely on civilian hospitals for health care, and hundreds of those hospitals are newly at-risk of closure or service cuts in the wake of Trump and the GOP’s Medicaid cuts.
- A Trump Administration “Targeting Mistake” Killed 175 People At An Iranian Elementary School on the First Day of War. On Feb. 28, a U.S. missile struck an Iranian elementary school, killing 175 people, mostly children. A preliminary investigation has shown that the strike was the result of a targeting mistake by U.S. Central Command using outdated coordinates. The investigation was hampered, however, by earlier budget cuts by Sec. Hegseth gutting the Pentagon oversight offices handling civilian casualties.
- 7 American Soldiers Died In A Facility That Lacked Adequate Protection From Aerial Attack, Drawing Criticism From Military Officials. Trump administration incompetence has already killed American soldiers in Trump’s war with Iran. At least six American soldiers died during an attack on a tactical operations center in Kuwait. Dozens more suffered injuries, including brain trauma, shrapnel wounds, and burns. In the days following, an additional service member died due to health complications. Three military officials have questioned whether the building was adequately fortified against Iranian drones and missiles, telling reporters that the center was merely a trailer with office space fortified by T-walls, lacking overhead protection. Instead of taking accountability, however, Trump dismissed the military deaths as “the way it is,” and said, “There will likely be more before it ends.”
- Air Force Veteran: “Operational Incompetence” Led To the Loss of Three Fighter Jets. On Mar. 2, Kuwait mistakenly shot down three American F-15E fighter jets in a friendly fire incident. An Air Force veteran attributed the loss to “operational incompetence,” given that the U.S. Air Force is permanently stationed in Kuwait and the two countries regularly train together.
Trump Did Not Prepare For Oil Shocks & Has No Plan To Fix Supply Anytime Soon
- Trump Was Completely Unprepared For Wartime Disruption of Global Oil Supplies. On Feb. 18, Trump’s Energy Secretary Chris Wright said he was not concerned that war would disrupt oil supplies in the Middle East and wreak havoc in energy markets. They did not take preemptive action to prevent oil prices from spiking, as the U.S. did during the Gulf War, and invaded with the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve at around 58% capacity, even though Trump promised to refill the reserves back in January 2025.
-
- Trump Has No Plan To Reopen The Strait of Hormuz. Sen. Murphy, after the Trump administration briefing, said the Trump administration has “NO PLAN” to get the Strait of Hormuz “safely back open.” Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes – closed to foreign traffic. It is targeting ships that pass through, and is in the process of mining the Strait. The U.S. Navy, which initially promised to protect shipping traffic, has now admitted it is incapable of protecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s Incompetence Has Put Civilians, American Diplomats, and U.S. Citizens Living Abroad In Harm’s Way
- Trump Attacked Without Evacuating Diplomats and Their Families From Embassies That Have Been Targeted and Shuttered. The Trump administration did not prepare to evacuate its diplomatic missions in the Middle East before launching the strikes, only authorizing the departure of non-emergency personnel from Israel and Lebanon. Subsequently, over a dozen diplomatic facilities around the globe have been hastily closed or evacuated, in the midst of attacks.
-
- Three U.S. Embassies Are Closed After War with Iran Led To Attacks and Escalating Violence. The State Department has now been forced to close its embassies in Kuwait, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia entirely. The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait City was hit by Iranian aerial strikes. The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was hit by two drones, causing a fire.
-
- The U.S. Has Evacuated Nine Diplomatic Facilities Across the Middle East. In the wake of Trump’s escalating war with Iran, the U.S. has been forced to evacuate non-emergency diplomats in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Cyprus, Pakistan, and a Turkish Consulate. The U.S. Consulate in Dubai, UAE was targeted by a drone that struck an adjacent parking lot and caused a fire. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq was targeted in a rocket attack that hit embassy grounds, and was later struck by a drone.
-
- At Least Four Additional U.S. Diplomatic Facilities Have Been Targeted and Attacked. The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, which just opened in December, has been targeted by drones. A U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan was attacked by rioters in the first few days of the conflict. As the war has dragged on, U.S. diplomatic facilities far from the conflict have been targeted. Shots were fired at the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto, Canada, and the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway was damaged in a targeted attack by an explosive device.
- Up to One Million Americans Were Stranded in the Middle East With No Comprehensive Evacuation Plan. Trump launched strikes against Iran without any consideration for U.S. nationals in the region. Instead, the State Department has been forced to issue post-hoc warnings to U.S. nationals in the area, and is scrambling to secure military airplanes and charter flights for evacuation. Up to 1 million U.S. nationals are stranded in the Middle East, with thousands requesting evacuation even as President Trump has no plan to get them home. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem admitted they are “not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.” Israel and the U.S. have been desperately shuttling Americans to the Egyptian border as missiles scream overhead and flights remain few and far between.
