“Liberation Day” at One Year: Trump’s Tariffs Have Cost American Families $1,700 and Broken Every Promise Made

By April 2, 2026No Comments

Today, on the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcement, Defend America Action released a sweeping new report detailing how Trump’s tariff regime has failed American workers, businesses, and families on every front. One year ago, Trump stood in the Rose Garden and promised his tariffs would usher in record economic growth, bring factories roaring back to America, and make foreign nations foot the bill. He broke every single one of those promises.

Instead of foreign nations paying, Americans absorbed 96% of the tariff burden, costing the average household over $1,700 last year. Instead of record growth, GDP crawled to just 0.7% in the last quarter of 2025. Instead of a manufacturing renaissance, America lost manufacturing jobs while factory construction plummeted. In total, nearly 200,000 blue-collar jobs have been lost in the last year.

And Americans are feeling it. Seven in ten say Trump’s tariffs have cost them money, and almost the same amount disapprove of the policy entirely. Even the Supreme Court agreed, ruling Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs unconstitutional. Rather than comply, Trump simply reimposed them through other means.

Americans’ tab keeps growing, and Trump and Republicans are responsible. Happy Liberation Day.
