On 90th Anniversary of Social Security, Trump and MAGA Republicans Are Putting the Program on the Chopping Block

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act, landmark legislation signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that created a vital lifeline for millions of American seniors who would otherwise be left without sufficient financial resources to support themselves. Yet after ninety years of success, Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are taking a sledgehammer to a program with near universal approval, gutting the Social Security Administration and engaging in backdoor privatization schemes. To make matters worse, the program’s trust fund reserves are set to deplete in less than ten years, thanks in part to Trump’s signature Big, Ugly Bill.

In response, Defend America Action Senior Spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite released the following statement:

“Ninety years ago, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, making a promise to all of America’s seniors that their government would take care of them in their retirement – but today, on this milestone anniversary, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are recklessly threatening this critical program and pushing it dangerously close to insolvency. First, Trump and his cabinet gutted the Social Security Administration, throwing the system into complete, utter chaos and forcing millions of seniors to travel long distances to verify their benefits. Then, Trump’s minions in Congress passed his Big, Ugly Bill, which turbocharged the timeline for Social Security’s insolvency.

“Protecting Social Security was one of Trump’s many empty promises on the campaign trail last year. While he and his out-of-touch billionaire cabinet may not be able to appreciate the value of this lifesaving program, American seniors sure do, and they’ll remember who put their earned benefits on the chopping block.”
