WASHINGTON, D.C. — Texas Democrats have courageously refused to legitimize Republicans’ brazen attempts to put a power grab over flood victims, breaking quorum to stand against Donald Trump’s special-ordered gerrymandering scheme. Now, the Trump administration is siccing the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Texas Democrats, hunting them down so Republicans in the state can ram through their anti-democratic agenda. All this comes as Republicans also push Trump’s MAGA Justices on the Supreme Court to dismantle the Voting Rights Act’s protections against racial gerrymandering.
In response, Defend America Action Senior Spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s desperation to avoid any electoral consequences for his asinine, unpopular agenda that everyone hates has predictably stepped into authoritarianism. He’s wasting federal law enforcement’s time and taxpayer resources trying to round up his political opponents in order to force a vote on disenfranchising Texas voters, who are still picking up the pieces and trying to recover from devastating and deadly flooding.
“Trump’s Republican minions called a special session not to prioritize relief for those flood victims and their families, but to draw up a map-rigging scheme to hand Trump five new Republican House seats on a silver platter. And they’re doing it for one reason: they know that Trump and his agenda are so deeply unpopular with the American people that the only way they’ll survive the midterm elections is to not only rig the rules, but change the board entirely. Instead of delivering on any of the promises Trump made to improve Americans’ lives, he’s once again running the same playbook of lies, cheating, and desperation that’s running our democracy into the ground.”
