FACT SHEET: Iran Profits While Americans Pay for Trump’s War

By March 31, 2026No Comments

Ever since Donald Trump launched strikes against Iran over a month ago, igniting a deeply unpopular, protracted conflict that has pushed the global economy to the brink. Not only has Trump exposed his total lack of concern for the needs and priorities of working Americans in the wake of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz and constraining oil, gas, and fertilizer supplies, but his staggering incompetence has left Iran in a better financial position than before. The regime is directly earning twice as much from oil, which it has continued to export at the same  (if not higher) rate and is now able to sell its sea-bound oil stock sanction-free. Meanwhile, the GOP is floating plans to foot the $200 billion bill for Trump’s war in Iran by making even deeper cuts to health care, despite slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act last year – and Trump still has no plan to get us out of this huge mess. Read more about how Iran is profiting from Trump’s war:

  • Iran is earning nearly twice as much from oil sales each day compared to before Trump launched strikes against Iran.
  • Trump temporarily lifted sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian oil at sea, giving the country a $14 billion windfall.
    • Iran is now able to sell oil without U.S. sanctions for the first time in nearly a decade thanks to Trump’s temporary hold on sanctions.
    • Iran’s top ally and U.S. adversary, Russia, is also able to sell oil without U.S. sanctions even as it shares advanced drone technology and satellite targeting data on U.S. bases with Iran.
  • Iran is exporting at least as much oil as it was before the war, while production from its competitors in the Gulf has plummeted due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Trump has continually extended his “deadline” for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and his 15-point plan offers Iran concessions in exchange for opening the Strait – which was open to free trade before Trump ever launched strikes against Iran in the first place.
