For months, Republicans have ignored price hikes driven by Trump’s tariffs and Republicans’ Big, Ugly Bill. Today, they delivered another devastating blow to working Americans’ checking accounts, ripping away tax credits which help over 21 million Americans afford health care and prevent millions of families from going uninsured.
Make no mistake: Republicans have no interest in helping people get affordable health care; they knew all year that these tax credits were expiring and couldn’t even bother to hold a vote until December. But 6 months ago they passed trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the wealthy and slashed Medicaid by a trillion dollars to pay for it. Republicans deserve all the blame for hiking premiums and sending health care costs soaring after they refused to extend ACA tax credits while giving billionaires trillions of dollars in permanent tax breaks. They would rather billionaires cash bigger and bigger checks than restore tax credits which have worked to help people receive lifesaving care. Read more about what ripping away these tax credits entails:
BY THE NUMBERS
- More than 60 percent of federal spending on ACA tax credits goes to families making less than $100,000 a year.
- Costs will skyrocket by more than $1,000 on average annually for millions of families.
- Families will pay more than double for their health care on average.
- At least 3.8 million people will have their health care ripped away entirely and go uninsured.
- Families who are unable to afford health insurance and lose their coverage could see their medical debt increase by as much as $22,800.
