As White House Panics Over Their Self-Inflicted Health Care Crisis, Americans Blame Donald Trump and GOP for Their Shutdown

By October 3, 2025No Comments

SHOT: Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans in Congress have shut down the federal government instead of solving the Trump Health Care Crisis. Now several days in, the White House is starting to panic, worried that voters are blaming Republicans, who control the White House and both houses of Congress, for their shutdown and for the skyrocketing health care premiums Americans are already seeing

Wall Street Journal: President Trump has projected unwavering confidence that he is winning the messaging war over the government shutdown. But behind the scenes, his team is increasingly concerned that the issue at the center of the debate will create political vulnerabilities for Republicans. Advisers are worried that the GOP will take the blame for allowing healthcare subsidies to expire, raising costs for millions of Americans ahead of next year’s midterm elections, according to administration officials.

CHASER: …and they’re right to be worried. Fresh polling shows that Americans blame Trump and Republicans for the GOP shutdown by a wide, 17-point margin, including half of independents. On top of that, it also shows that the American people overwhelmingly support extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits that make their coverage affordable: more than 70% don’t want Republicans to end those subsidies.

NBC News: The U.S. government is shut down, and Americans are more inclined to blame President Donald Trump and Republicans for it, according to four independent, national polls conducted just before or during the funding lapse. A Washington Post poll conducted on Oct. 1, the first day of the shutdown, found that 47% of U.S. adults blame Trump and Republicans in Congress. The survey found that independents blamed Trump and Republicans over Democrats by a wide margin of 50% to 22%. And one-third of Republicans were either unsure who to blame (25%) or blamed their party (8%). Polling on the health care subsidies is sparse at the moment, but the Washington Post survey found that 71% of U.S. adults want the ACA subsidies to be extended.
