SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN: Trump and Republicans Are Forcing A Shutdown to Sustain The Health Care Crisis They Created to Pay for Billionaire Tax Breaks

By September 16, 2025No Comments

With the federal government hurling toward a shutdown, Trump and Republicans are refusing to address a health care crisis of their own making. Between Trump’s disastrous Big, Ugly Bill tearing down health care and RFK Jr. slashing and dismantling our country’s critical public health institutions, they fomented this crisis and are forcing a shutdown to keep Americans in dire straits. As House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries noted, “The House Republican-only spending bill fails to meet the needs of the American people and does nothing to stop the looming healthcare crisis. At a time when families are already being squeezed by higher costs, Republicans refuse to stop Americans from facing double-digit hikes in their health insurance premiums.” Not only is this a crisis of their own doing, but Republicans are planning on forcing a shutdown to perpetuate it and give tax breaks to billionaires instead of fixing our broken health care system that puts working families last and the ultra-wealthy and big corporations first.

12 WAYS TRUMP & REPUBLICANS HAVE CREATED A HEALTH CARE CRISIS

  1. 🩺 Ripping health care away from over 15 million Americans to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.
  2. ✂️ Cutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and Obamacare.
  3. 💸 Ending tax credits and hiking premiums for over 22 million Americans who will see their health care costs nearly double on average this fall.
  4. 🤒 Imposing a sick tax on over 20 million low-income Americans on Medicaid, hitting families with new bills each time they see a doctor – even for chronic conditions.
  5. 🏥 Threatening to shutter over 330 hospitals, 570 nursing homes, and hundreds of clinics across the country, forcing more Americans to travel further for maternity care and emergency rooms, face longer wait times, and endure higher costs.
  6. 📈 Triggering nearly $500 billion in cuts to Medicare by exacerbating the national deficit.
  7. 🤑 Forcing low-income seniors to pay thousands more each year for health care by raising their premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
  8. 💰 Forcing over 5 million people to take on an average of $22,280 in medical debt who previously had none.
  9. 💊 Giving away billions to drug companies by driving up the cost of prescription drugs for seniors on Medicare.
  10. 🥼Overruling top medical experts on vaccine policy and replacing every member of the top national vaccine advisory panel.
  11. 💉 Ending cutting-edge mRNA vaccine research and ripping away funding for developing vaccines for certain forms of cancer, HIV, bird flu, and more.
  12. 💼 Laying off thousands of employees at the CDC, FDA, and other top health agencies.
