Trump, Republicans Have Moved One Step Closer to Ripping Food and Health Care Away from Millions of Americans to Fund Tax Breaks for the Rich

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Donald Trump and Senate Republicans rammed their anti-family Big, Ugly Bill through the U.S. Senate by the slimmest of margins, coming one step closer to ripping food out of the mouths of children and health care away from seniors and disabled Americans – all to fund tax breaks for billionaires and corporations. Their extreme, unpopular bill dramatically slashes funding for health care and food assistance, throwing American families overboard, including wide swaths of Republican voters. But the American people, 97% of whom say Medicaid is important for folks in their local community, are not buying it, and overwhelmingly oppose this reckless bill.

In response, Defend America Action Senior Spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite released the following statement:

“After days of trying to keep the impacts of this disastrous bill from hitting everyone but their constituents, Senate Republicans united to gut health care and food assistance to fund tax breaks for billionaires like Donald Trump, the ultra-wealthy, and corporations. Republicans know better than anyone that this bill is morally wrong and politically suicidal, but at Trump’s command they obediently voted yes anyway. Their message to the millions of Americans who depend on these programs to survive? ‘Get over it.’ For Americans who rely on Medicaid and food assistance, Donald Trump and Senate Republicans just cast them aside, raising their costs, inflicting pain, and putting their health, economic well being, and lives in jeopardy to do what Republicans always do: put their wealthy friends ahead of working families.”
