“US Consumer Sentiment Falls Close to Record Low on Inflation” and Voters Across the Board See Worst Personal Finances Since 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. — While Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are hard at work preparing to get health care and food assistance to pay for an extreme, unpopular tax handout to the ultra-rich, hardworking Americans are suffering the worst personal finances since the Great Recession of 2009. Thanks to Trump’s tariffs, shoppers are seeing higher prices on the things they need most, and retailers like Walmart are warning that’ll only get worse in the coming months.

In response, Defend America Action Senior Spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite released the following statement:

“Voters across the country are on to Donald Trump. Between him single-handedly raising prices on everything — from groceries to school supplies to strollers — and his plan to kick hardworking Americans off their health care to ensure the ultra-wealthy get another tax cut, it’s no wonder that consumer sentiment is nearing record lows. As hard as Trump tries, you cannot lie to the American people about their personal finances, and today’s report shows that the public’s bullshit detector is finely tuned.”

See expert reporting and analysis on Trump’s crashing economy below:

  • According to the University of Michigan, US consumer sentiment unexpectedly fell to the second-lowest level on record and inflation expectations soared to multi-decade highs amid growing concerns about tariffs last month. Consumers now expect prices to rise at an annual rate of 7.3% over the next year, the highest since 1981.
  • Consumer sentiment is collapsing even among Republicans – and it’s thanks to Donald Trump’s trade policies. Nearly 75% of respondents spontaneously mentioned tariffs as driving their concerns, including a notable share of Republicans.
  • Consumers’ views of their current personal finances have dropped to the lowest since 2009 and their financial expectations slid to a fresh record low.
